GRCC's Kane wins Perserverance Award

Congratulations to senior Matt Kane, the senior from the Grand Rapids Catholic Central Cougars. Earlier today, Kane was named the 2008 winner of the MHSCHA Perserverance Award, given annually to a high school hockey player who has overcome a significant happening in his/her life and through their courage, determination and desire not to quit, have made the most of their situation. There were three winners this year, though the award is typically presented annually to one player, inclusive of all divisions, who exhibits the following qualities:

  1. Courage
  2. Determination
  3. Over come adversity
  4. Perseverance
  5. Dedication to H.S. hockey
  6. Positive example to others
  7. Minimum 2.0 GPA
Kane, who was a captain for the two years, has had multiple surgeries to treat a brain tumor that was discovered when he was 12 years old. The Grand Rapids Press provided a nice account of his illness and determination to overcome it back in January.

Any one who knows Matt knows what a great kid -- and a great hockey player -- he is. A prototype captain who works hard at practice, leads by example and is great in the locker room, too. The MHSCHA couldn't have chosen a better recipient for the award.

I've now deleted two comments from someone named snapshot15 because he insists on being critical (which is fine) but insists on doing it in a tone that I find kind of snotty and demeaning.

And I guess the fact that I remove comments like that signals to snapshot15 that I "have much to learn about hockey" (as he wrote.)

Tis true. I do have a lot to learn about hockey, but I would postulate that snapshot15 has "much to learn about how to treat other people."

As I've said before, there is a forum for making nasty comments about coaches and players, it just isn't here.

Snapshot, if you'd like to discuss this at more length, please feel free to email me directly at brian.h.edwards@gmail.com.
