Tuesday Night Hockey: MHSAA Quarterfinals

Portage Central (16-9-2) vs. Forest Hills Northern/Eastern (16-10-1) - (7 p.m. @ Georgetown in Hudsonville): Tonight's quarterfinal matchup will decide which West Michigan team makes a trip to Compuware with a spot in the Division-2 frozen four. Forest Hills Northern/Eastern is deep and very gifted offensively, with its top 2 lines among the best in the area -- a mix of dazzle and grit epitomized by Jeff Johnston and Luke Swardenski. Defensively, they're anchored by seniors Sam Swardenski and Spencer Mulder, and they get more than capable goaltending from the pair of senior Sean Winks and sophomore Ian Jester. Portage Central is more of a defensive-minded team that's backstopped by all-conference sophomore Brogan Vandevelde, who plays behind a very talented defensive corps lead by Chris Sandmeyer, Erik Malin and Todd Miller. That doesn't mean the Mustangs can't score goals: Jared Hook, J. Rehm and Erik Hoffman offer a lot of firepower up front. Both have played tough schedules this year, including trips to the Trenton Showcase. With their contrasting styles and senior leaders letting it all hang out for a chance at a state championship, this could be one of the best games between two West Michigan teams this season.

FHNE wins 4-1. Portage showed a lot of heart and very classy at the end. Great year for Portage. They are young and will be back next year.
