"In the big picture, this is just a hockey game."

Forest Hill Northern/Eastern Coach Kevin Zaschak was all hugs after his team won its Division 2 quarterfinal game tonight, beating Portage Central 4-1. After the game was over, he stood outside the locker room high-fiving and hugging his buddies. Then his daughter, who must be about five, ran up to him. He scooped her up and hugged her, then wandered over and hugged his wife, too.

The hugs weren't all about hockey, one has to believe. It's been a rough couple of days for teachers and students of Forest Hills Northern and Forest Hills Eastern, the two schools which make up the unified team Zaschak coaches. On Saturday, Forest Hills Eastern senior Rebecca Vogelsang was involved in a car crash that has left her lying in a coma at Spectrum hospital. Then on Monday, FHN senior Sara Smajic collapsed during theater rehearsals and passed away two hours later with a blood clot in her lung.

The Forest Hills players wore green ribbons on their helmets in tribute to Smajic tonight, and Zaschak, who teaches at Northern, talked about her in his pregame speech to his players. "I reminded them life is short and told them to go out and have fun tonight, and don't worry about making mistakes," he told me. "In the big picture, this is just a hockey game."

From what I saw on the ice, the FHNE players listened. From the moment they stepped out of the locker room they were whooping and hollering, and they played with passion and emotion from the drop of the puck. There were smiles around after they went up 1-0 on a bad angle shot by senior Andrew Rennaker that somehow got up over PC goalie Brogan Vandevelde's shoulder. The fun continued in the second period when senior Jeff Johnston drove right down the middle through traffic and picked a corner to put FHNE up 2-0. A couple minutes later, on a whistle, junior Luke Swardenski was laughing and kidding with a PC player, pretending that his stick was tangled up in the Mustang player's jersey. On the ensuing faceoff, Swardenski got the puck, went down the right wing and ripped a slapshot that found the twine. To celebrate, the FHNE players did what hockey players often do after goals -- a group hug along the boards.

Portage Central got one back late in the second, when Chris Sandmeyer beat FHNE goalie Sean Winks with a seeing-eye slapshot off a face-off with 3.2 seconds left in the period. Usually, those goals at the end of a period are killers for the team that gives them up. True to form, FHNE came out on its heels in the first minute of the third period, as PC took it to them. The momentum didn't last for long, as FHNE regained its legs and got aggressive on the forecheck. Rennaker put the game out of reach with a PP goal at the 6:12 mark, and from there FHNE just ragged the puck for the remainder of the game. Final shots were 22-16 in favor of Forest Hills. Winks got the win in net.

After the game, Zaschak, who shaved his head for the game, couldn't contain how proud he was of his team, which had been plagued earlier in the season by penalties. Tonight, they made only two trips to the box, and played disciplined hockey. "In the locker room before the game, we could hear the Portage Central coaches through the walls, and they were telling their players that we were an undisciplined team," he said. "We used that as a bit of motivation."

As if his team needed any extra motivation after a week like this. Boosting his daughter up on his shoulders, Zaschak looked around the Georgetown rink and took in the moment. He let out a big breath and then looked back at me and said, "This is so surreal."

Excellent game last night, I was impressed by the speed of both teams, the discipline that FHN/E played with, and their tight defense that didn't allow the Mustangs to get much going offensively. Go BirdDogs, make the West Side of the state proud.

FHNE always had a backchecker and the defense/goaltending was very solid. The FHNE forwards can put points on the board...the difference in the playoffs has been in their defensive zone. Congrats FHNE. Keep it going Thursday night against Trenton!!

Best wishes/success to FHN/E moving forward. Fantastic write up & pictues. clear team was playing for a higher cause & will continue too. Having played against FHN/E more than once this season, we have seen their penalties. One is niave to think this team is uncontrolled -they always play with great passion!! We are all cheering you on & know you can take it all!!!

The news of these young girls is very sad. It is so tragic to have our young children taken from us. My families sympathies to all of the family and friends of the young ladies from Forrest Hills.

Good luck to FHN/E at Compuware this weekend. With a solid team effort and commitmant to defense you can bring home the crown. Like your coach said have fun and enjoy the ride.

An EK Dad

PS. Chip you still owe me $5.. Congrats on your son's performance.

This FHN/E team claimed last year that they were building a program very similiar to Mona Shores, now the FHN/E coach is sporting a similiar haircut to Mona's current and ex coaches.

I'm not making that up, he said it. Also, last year when they played, nobody found it odd they had the EXACT same drills during the warm ups? I'm not saying it is a bad thing, but similiar haircuts may be taking it a little too far.

What subjects does Zachak teach at Northern?

not to defend fhne, b/c i wouldnt, but most teams have close to the same warm up.

Same warm up in the same order at the same time? It didn't matter what side you looked at, you saw the same thing on both ends.

Well,it appears that fhn/e is the only WM team left. Good luck and bring home the hardware. Nothing like your first trip to Compuware. Trenton is a tough team but so are you.

Wow I think I've heard it all. You think because the coach respects Mona's program that they put in place the same warm up and now the same haircut. That is funny. You should try stand up,

Everyone can learn something from someone. The coaches and players both on all the teams have worked hard this season, experienced the thrill of victory and the agony of defeat. In the end Forest Hills Northern/Eastern is going to Compuware. Best of luck. Bring the win back to this side of the state.

Most drills, warmups, practice plans and systems are copied by coaches. And no better programs to copy them from than Mona and EK. Definitely the 2 premier programs on the west side.

Hopefully we can use some of what we've borrowed and take down Trenton tonight.

GO FHNE!!!!!!

Trenton is a strong team. FHN/E will win if you beleive you will. your better/stronger now more than ever.

Trenton expects to win - a dangerouis mindset. You are stated undergogs. A great advantage if you accept it & play 3 periods as a united team. Great example is MSU winning it all last year. everyone expected Notre Dame to do it, except MSU players & coaches.

Go for it your way FHN/E. It won't be easy but you will win if you decide to do what it takes. Many in all WM tiers are routing for you, because you have earned it. Enjoy the journey!!

Good luck to FHN/E tonight at Compuware, it is an experience you will never forget. Also, I wouldn't say Trenton thinks that they have already won it. You don't go 23-1-4 thinking that way, but hopefully FHN/E pulls out the true underdog story. Aim low.
