A crowd estimated at nearly 700 fans witnessed a dominating performance by the Portage Central Mustangs this evening in Kalamazoo. Sophomore goalie Brogan VandeVelde earned the #1 star by shutting down the Sailors and allowing only 1 goal on 24 shots. Senior Erik Hoffman, #2 star, scored the first two goals in this game by going hard to the net and banging home the rebounds. Linemates Jared Hook and Cody VanderVeen (#3 star) were forcing Mona Shores to turn the puck over the entire game. Hook delivered the knock out punch at the 10:04 mark of the second period when he received a pass from VanderVeen and fired a wrister past a sprawling Scott Tiefenthal.
Mona's Ryan Burmeister earned the only goal of the game for his team. He received a pass from Senior JC Boyd and backhanded the puck into the upper right corner of the net. Tyler McCarl also was credited with an assist. The Mustangs Chris Sandmeyer finished the scoring with an empty netter late in the third period. Tiefenthal stopped 25 of the 28 shots he faced.

Wait a minute...in 1983 PC went to semi-state, lost to a dominating Flint team...David Copp, Anti Lucko, Scott Staples and others were on that team...I know, I road the bus to watch the game in Flint...it was my Senior year too...check the record books...believe Ralston played for Flint that year...it's been 25 years!
yeah, i'm pretty sure they were winning regionals just a couple of years ago because Shores and Portage Central played each other in the quarterfinals a couple times
