D-1 Championship ends in a 1-1 tie

If you haven't heard, the Division 1 championship game was called after 8 overtimes with the game tied 1-1. Marquette and Orchard Lake St. Mary's were named co-champions. Personally, I think ties are the worst of all outcomes in sports. While I understand that there was concern for the health of the players, they certainly could have figured out another way to end it. Penalty shots? Let them rest for a night and play another game? Give them each a series of downs starting at the 25 yard line?

This was the championship game of the Divison 1 hockey season. Playing 30 games to end up kissing your sister. Not a big fan of the decision. So what are your thoughts on a 1-1 tie in the championship game?

that SUCKS!!! Why play all season and all 8 OT's to tie?

I don't think this is right for the players or the fans that spent 3.5 hours watching and playing in a game to decide the State Championship. The players play 4 months to end up kissing your sister. I am not sure what the right fix is but there needs to be a winner!

Is this how high schools going to decide championships?? No winner. They have made this an embarresment to all, especially hockey. You, Mr. Blogger, have opened hockey to so many people and have gotten more people involved in high school hockey and now this happens. Whoever made this decision should never be allowed back on the ice, wheather the coaches, refs or AD of both schools. They need to be fired. Give me a break a TIE in the STATE CHAMPIONSHIP game.

one word....stupid

To all those who are upset with the tie, get over it, nothing you can do about it now. Yes it does suck, but that is how it ended. And to the person who said something about people needing to be fired...grow up and get over yourself. This situation will just make a push for having a set in stone protocol on how to handle a game like this when it goes that late.

As far as the health of the players, what if this game had continued and gone an even more OT's and some kid had passed out and got hurt, or even heaven forbid die, would you then be saying they should have stopped it, and those people should be fired?

All I can say is your not in the same position as the high ups in the MHSAA so you don't know what is really going on and what is being said.

Everyone has a opionion and thats thier right, but realize these are high school kids...there is also a education experiance here.

This will be a black mark on high school hockey for years to come . I was speachless when I heard the outcome . two teams who get to say " we did not lose the the state championship game "

How sad

hopefully someone can tell us honestly why this happened ? Money ? admin costs ? time ? I will tell you that is wasn;t the players decision as it should have been........

school admis at their worse ! How many kids will decide to play elite hockey instead od HS hockey down the road over this decision ? I couldn't blame them ....

Its as sad a day for HS athletics that I've ever been witness to .

I'm with those who say " fire them " !!

They should have played until someone won, or gone to a shootout

How would the game have been decided if it was an early round or semi-final game? There could be no ties. Whatever the answer to that question, should be applied to the finals.

Anyways, it is what it is...congrats to both teams and the kids should all be proud, regardless.

To all, have a great summer and THANKS to Brian the Blogger for all he has done to increase the interest of HS hockey in West Michigan!

Maybe it Should have been Decided on Most shots on Goal?? NO then how about most Saves?? NO? Guess we"re right back where we started!
How many time have you heard after a Game like this (There should be two Winners) Now ya got um . Most of you folks complaining I Bet never played in a Hockey game of any Level in your life. Get over it.

I agree with the posting about having new protocol in place for the future. I listened to the game it was high school hockey at it's best . . . both goalies made some SPECTACULAR saves. Yes, it was sad that there wasn't a winner, but it doesn't negate any of the players personal stats and they can put on their resume they played on a state championship team. It's over, so get it over it. Congratulations to both teams!!

GAYEST thing I have ever heard.

go to this website and scroll a little over half way down. Specific rule state that unlimited overtimes must be played to determine a winner. unlimited does not mean less that 9, or stop after 8 and call it good.

Some of the current Big Rapids players were "Co-Champions" of their Pee Wee or Bantam league a few years back, for the same reason, and the best thing I heard said by one of the players was that it felt like kissing his sister.

I wasn't at the game, but was following it online. It was amazing imagining the excitement, drama and pressure of the moment. I was shocked when they called it final...without a winner.

It's simple, just like a rain delay in baseball or a golf match that ends due to darkness...finish it the next day. Or the next weekend for that matter.

Could you imagine the attention...even national for these kids. They are part of history, the next disney movie, the next miracle on ice. The opportunity ruined by coaches and officials that didn't know or follow the rules.

Great effort by the kids, but sad day for HS hockey in my opinion.

We came
We saw
We both tied ?

Nobody loses, no Division 1 champions this year.

Anonymous said...

would this of happened in a D1 football game or a D1 basketball game i think not it would make national news if it did but hockey it can.

All during the palyoffs they read out before the games that good sports are winners and you should play by the rules, but wait in the state championship they dont by calling it early

this could have shown the better team for sure if it was played all the way through.

Someone should call ABC news and inform them on the junk some people call a game by calling it early because it was pasted someones bed time.

Anonymous said...

i think that if i played in the game i wouldnt have left the ice until that game was done.....it shows that the players didnt have enough strength to keep going

Anonymous said...

when your in the state championship game you cant play 8 overtimes and call it good, you gotta get ur ass out there and score that FU*Kin goal.

It's over-be glad for the battle put forth by both teams. We dislike outcome yet can't deny both teams are deserving. For those who don't rememeber, Michigan had to share national championshop football title with another team. result was a change in College football system the next year. hope this event will cause change in MHSAA rules next year - 2 or 3 OT's & then shoot out is my vote. Yea it does suck & usually forces rules to be changed for the better. Time for MHSAA to step up.

Anonymous said...

Can't vote yes to win unless rules are changed for all games any mi. HS team plays.
was there with middle school Hockey son. unless you were there, have researched & learned MHSAA rules, saw the total OT minutes played, exhaustion from both teams & disapponment from players, coaches & refs having to end game after extensive painful review, accept all wanted one winner. MHSAA did not give rule options needed to decide any other option.

Having experienced a couple of similar situations through the years, I can understand both points of view here.

We had a squirt AA team play 7 OT's in the Little Ceasar's semi-finals once and played 9 OT's in a Silver Stick Regional final another time. The kids were dead-dog tired. What usually happens is some garbage goal ends up ending the game because the kids are too tired to play any more. I think I'd rather see co-champs than have a shoot-out or a garbage goal decide the winner.

We also played in the LC championship game at The Joe once and were only allowed a single OT before co-champs were declared. That was not fun.

I think MHSAA and the coaches made a decision that was best for these kids. They must have all been running on "E" by the end of 8.

Congratulations to BOTH State Champs! Don't let anyone take anything away from what you have accomplished with negative comments about the way it ended.

Agree with last posted comments & have seen same: sloppy goals win games due to player exhaustion. Both teams players gave everything. as physician-injury/dehydration/other complicaitons for HS/young players create more danger to them the longer they play. MHSAA must change rules for all games played. This does happen in College or NHL games for a reason. 2 champion teams this year because of MHSAA rules that neither coaches or refs could change. How anyone can deny title to both teams based on current rules is not justified. I applaud refs for calling game for safety & health of these you men.

Someone has to win and someone has to lose in Finals games. That's the truth of it - the Final game determines a Winner and a Loser. Otherwise - why bother keeping score. There should have been a rule in place long before now. To go back and say MHSAA has to come up with a fix is ridiculous -the fix should have been in place - no one has answered the best question of all - What if this had been a semi-final? Then what? Poor management decisions for a STATE CHAMPIONSHIP - give Michigan HS Hockey a black eye, for sure.
