I've always been a fan of the notion that athletics teaches you life lessons. And, as I've blogged a few times this season, I do believe that the phrase "student-athlete" is properly stated and the words are in their proper order. With that in mind, I'm pleased to announce that the West Michigan High School Hockey Blog will be offering a $1,000 scholarship to a graduating senior who played varsity hockey for his or her high school team during the 2007-08 season.
The scholarship has a some simple criteria, which do not, incidentally, include goals, assists, +/- or save percentage. While we certainly admire excellent hockey stats, the scholarship criteria are:
1. Graduating college-bound senior who plays on his or her varsity team
2. Academic excellence
3. Financial need
4. Any other salient factors (e.g., community service, leadership, etc.)
You can grab a copy of the application below (double-click for a large version) or email me at brian.h.edwards@gmail.com. Deadline for this application is March 30, 2008. The winner will be announced June 1, 2008.
