Players of the Week

Playoffs start tomorrow, and the WMHSH Blog wanted to get a head start on all that is going on this week. So here today, you'll find the "Players of the Week." As with last week, there's a boatload of them, including a few that didn't necessarily impress with stats, but they came up big in a game or really reinforced the meaning of what it is to be a team player. Each of the players gets an official "Hockey Night in West Michigan" t-shirt, courtesy of the WMHSH Blog. The envelope please...

Adam Meloche, Mona Shores
: With the Sailors reeling, Meloche, a senior stepped up and notched two PP goals against Kentwood in the game that decided the OK-1 title. Meloche's second goal pulled Mona Shores even in the third period and put them in position to win the conference title.

Erik Hoffman, Portage Central : The Mustangs senior had a hat trick to help lead PC win the SWMHSHL championship and then bagged the game-winner with 2 seconds left to boost PC over East Grand Rapids on Friday night.

Andy Vanderklok, Kenowa Hills: The Knights senior scored twice to break open a 2-2 tie against Muskegon Reeths Puffer and give Kenowa Hills a chance to play for the league title against Forest Hills Central.

Pete Herman, Hudsonville: The senior netminder capped an impressive stretch over the past three weeks with strong wins over West Catholic and Jenison to close out the regular season.

Morgan Feenie, Forest Hills Central: The Rangers senior had 4 assists in the conference title-clincher against Kenowa Hills.

Ian Straayer, Grandville: The Bulldogs senior had both of Grandville's goals in a surprising 2-2 tie against Forest Hills Northern/Eastern, and also had a pair of goals against West Catholic in a 4-1 victory.

Kyle Carpenter & Jeff Zahm, Ottawa-Union
: The seniors each had a hat trick in a 6-5 overtime win against Kalamazoo United. Carpenter, a defenseman, had 3 goals and 3 assists, while Zahm, a forward, had 2 assists and 3 goals, including the game-winner in OT.

Bob Butterfield, Big Rapids: The Cardinals senior goalie pitched a shutout in a 2-0 win over the Bay Area Reps in the kind of game that is a goalie nightmare (or at least a goalie parent nightmare). He faced only 10 shots in the game, but a flurry of them came at the end of the game after the Bay Reps pulled their goalie to try to tie it up.

John Dery, Grand Rapids Catholic Central: The senior forward had 2 goals and 2 assists, including the game-winner in OT, to propel a Cougar comeback win over Portage Central on Monday night.

Carolyn Harwood, Northview: The Wildcat senior, who always plays much larger than her 5'2" frame, took a two-minute roughing penalty for defending her goalie after he'd been roughed up by one of Wayland's biggest players.

Kevin Campbell, Portage Northern: The senior forward had 5 points (a goal and 4 assists) in a blowout win over East Lansing to close out the Huskies regular season.

As always, please feel free to use the comments section of the Blog to post your own MVPs for this week. Or you can email me at brian.h.edwards@gmail.com.

To all players who've been named a POW: I will be sending your shirt to your coach, who will pass it out to you at an appropriate time. Good luck this week in the state playoffs.
