GRCC 4 EGR 1

Don't let the final score fool you. This was a 15-round slugfest. GRCC and EGR went toe-to-toe for 41 minutes and 3 seconds until the Cougars' John Dery delivered the knockout punch in the form of sick wrister from the left dot late in the third. The goal broke a 1-1 tie and silenced the rowdy EGR student section, while propelling Catholic Central to the win and a berth in the regional finals against Mattawan this Saturday evening.

This was a superexcellent game. Both teams played with skill and hustle, and the goaltending by Adam Janecyk (GRCC) and Ian McDonald (EGR) was nothing short of phenomenal. McDonald's glove save on Kevin Boman's backhand deke late in the third (while the Cougars were killing a 5-on-3, no less) was one of the best saves I've seen all year. Just downright robbery. His stretched out glove save on Clayton Brackett's low, far-corner slapshot in the first period was pretty larcenous, too. At the other end, Janecyk's 35 saves, especially his work during a second period flurry where he made four saves in a row on the left side of the net was vintage Janny.

Boman, for his part, was only robbed once. He scored the Cougars' first goal on the powerplay early in the second period, stealing the puck on a face off, winding through traffic and slipping it in short-side. East Grand Rapids tied it up 2:46 later when Joe Glendenning chased down a Greg Afendoulis pass and slipped it backhand to Drew O'Brien in front of the net. Janecyk made the initial save, but O'Brien pounded home his own rebound to tie the game at 1-1.

That's where the score remained, despite some great chances for both teams. With 7:10 left in the game, Dery took a penalty for cross-checking and then was joined in the box 1:43 later by Paul Ziemke, who was taken off for interference. That gave the Pioneers a brief 5-on-3, during which Boman stole a puck and moved in alone on McDonald, who made the spectacular glove save mentioned above. The crowd erupted and began cheering louder than they had all evening. Shortly after the ensuing faceoff, Dery charged out of the box, and Boman found him alone by the left dot with no one between him and McDonald. The Cougar senior ripped it far-side to the back of the net, and then turned to the stunned and now silent EGR student section and raised his arms. Boman and Tim Kane were credited with assists on the game-winner.

EGR pulled McDonald to try to get the equalizer, but Boman scored an empty netter with 43 seconds left (assists to Brackett and Ziemke) and then Dery added a second empty netter (assist to Matt Kane) to make the final margin 4-1. Shots were 36-24 in favor of EGR. Janecyk gets the win. Congratulations to the GRCC seniors, who move on and a tip of the hat to the entire EGR team, particularly seniors McDonald, Corey Domin, Ekco Morgan, Blaine Stahley, Devon Olsen, Billy Azkoul and Cullen Haskins, who was scratched because he was ill. A great game where everyone who played left it on the ice.

Congrats to GRCC. Ian McDonald showed there was more than one worthy all state goalie on the ice tonight. His save on Bowman was the best I've seen all year.

come on, why dont you mention the shots of the game? All credit is always directed toward the offense, when in all honesty Defense and Goaltending took this one for GRCC. GRCC has the best goalie in the state, look at his track record. The defense and goalie stood out in the pressured situation.

Shots were 36-24 in favor of GRCC. Great D on both ends. Domin played a ton for EGR. GRCC alternated its top 2 defensive lines (McShosh, Koenigschnect, Lefere and Tim Kane) most of the game. D was pretty good, but goaltending was even better.

Dyslexia set in - sorry the shots were backwards on the score sheet. I believe the EGR out shot CC. Ths shot count was right, but mis-placed. Sorry.

All i have to say is that grcc showed that they are the better team b/c they pulled through in the end. When it comes down to the fans all i can say is that egr fans can not dance!

C'mon people. Quit bashing individual players or pointing fingers at the fans who were, ummm, pointing a finger (or not). The reality is that some athletes say their greatest high is silencing a hostile crowd with a game-winning shot or a game-winning goal late in a close contest. The reality is that while most of you were filing out of the stands, the players were on the ice talking, congratulating each other and offering best wishes.

If you want to bitch about a player or call him out, there's a forum for that...it's just not here.

SHOTS. As noted above, the game's official scorer notes that shots were wrong on the scoresheet. The shots, though, are just a number. Janecyk and McDonald were spectacular and that can't just be judged in terms of the number of shots they faced.

Define the concept of "better team". Team is set of individuals who interact dynamically, INTERDEPENDENTLY and adaptively to achieve shared and valued objectives. Both teams achieved VALUED objectives. Pulling through doesn't define "better" only the score. Yes, I know, this means GRCC is moving on-congratulations, but you and I know the game could have gone either way; the end. DO NOT BERATE our valued EGR players, nor our fans, for their valliant efforts in providing an excellent showing of TEAM.

Once again WMHSH Blog gave fair credit & balance to both teams/ player efforts & success. He had no probelm "nailing" inappropriate comments on either side stated by some. He quickly apologized for any game detail mistakes written.
What the heck do you want from him? My kid has played with/against players on both teams seeing what the best on each do in any given game. Poor sportmanships displayed thru fans/parent commments is not what I want my son to learn from me - is that what you want yours to see or read? As a fan of both teams seeing multiple games by each, I have only seen supportive adult fans by both.
As one dad trying to teach my son, he knows the best team does not always win. He knows championship teams win key games even when struggling, working thru slumps, etc. Maybe parents of both teams can accept this truth: EGR has been playing great & on a role( Great to see at EGR) GRCC has been struggling ever since Matt Kane was injured & now trying to regain their rythym. No different if Domain was injured/could not play for EGR. Both young men inspire thier teams. If GRCC keeps winning,EGR players will always no how close they came to beating GRCC & should be very Proud ! I always have seen Parents /fans for both teams take the high road, win or lose, being the example all teams should emulate. Don't change this now. Your teams /players/coaches deserve more. Sincere Congrats to both teams for a great game.

It should be noted that EGR was missing a starting forward as well.
In the end the boys of both teams know how close it was to having a different outcome between 2 very evenly matched teams. They once more also have taken the lead role in showing the fans how to exit the ice as a class act & heads held high. It's too bad it takes so many lessons in this, & some still don't get it. They are to both be congratulated on not only giving their fans a great game Thursday evening, but all year long. One could've paid much more & still not have had such an awesome show. Hats off!
