Friday Night Hockey

East Kentwood vs. Mona Shores (8 p.m. @ Lakeshore) -- In any year, the first meeting of the season between West Michigan's two most-storied high school hockey teams is one to watch. That's especially true this year, as both Mona and EK graduated a lot of talent last year, hired new coaches in the off-season and, of course, there's more parity in the OK Conference than ever before. A win tonight by Mona may very well make them the favorite to win the OK Tier-1, while a win by Kentwood creates...well, confusion and opportunity for these two teams, as well as Forest Hills Northern/Eastern and Rockford (who square off tonight at Walker).

Don't look for a high-flying offensive game, as both EK and MS are very sound defensively and have been getting good goaltending. The game is both a league game and a first-rounder in the Stan Konrad Memorial Hockey Tournament, named for the Quebec native who played pro hockey in Muskegon and coached Mona Shores. The other side of the bracket features two pretty good teams in Portage Central and Grosse Pointe North, who face off beginning at 6 p.m.
