The Mona Shores Sailors fell short in a pair of games this weekend, dropping a 5-1 decision to the Huskies from Port Huron Northern on Friday night at the unfriendly confines of the McMorran Pavilion, just a slapshot away from the Canadian border. The Sailors were treated to a three goal outburst in the 2nd period, including a powerplay goal by Ryan Axsom.
The Sailors continued to outshoot their opponents, mustering a Redwing-like 41 shots against the Huskies, too many of which went center mass against PHN goalies Andrew Fadell and reliever Wade Holcomb. The lone goal for the Sailors came at 5:21 of the first period from Adam Meloche, assisted by Tyler “Youngblood” McCarl and J.C. Boyd. Sailor goalies Scott “Iced Tea” Tiefenthal and Chris Barrett combined to reject 21 shots from the host Huskies.
Saturday night was equally forgettable, with Shores on the wrong end of a 5-3 game against the Gross Point North Norseman. As classic rock and an obscure tune from The Riverdance belted out over the rink's Klipsch sound system, the Norseman pounced on a fumbled puck in the defensive zone of the road weary Sailors and deposited it in the back of the net. This short handed goal by the Norseman was a turning point in what otherwise would have been a 2-0 score at the end of one, instead setting the tone for a three goal outburst in the second period, two by GPN’s Jimmy Tocco.
Sailor JC Boyd and Adam Meloche continued to remind scorekeepers of their presence on the ice, with Boyd lighting the lamp with 4:21 remaining in the first on an assist from Meloche and the always dangerous Tyler “Blue Steel” McCarl. Boyd also scored in the third, with assistance again from the generous Meloche and Brock Carlston. Sandwiched between Boyd’s outburst was a well earned goal by the Sailor’s second line, also referred to as the Insane Clown Posse, who closed out the first period with a goal by Iron Mike Soto, assisted by David “Chicken Wing” Coppock and Austin “Little Cletus” Zaloga.
Sailor goalie Dan Harwood cast aside 27 shots by the Norseman for the game. Mona Shores returns home next Saturday for a league tilt against Fort Hills Northern/Eastern at the Lakeshore Sports Centre at 4pm.
