Grand Rapids Catholic Central moves to 10-0 with a win over Chicago-based Mt. Carmel (alma mater of Chris Chelios) in the opening round of the Joe Raymond Memorial Tournament in suburban Milwaukee. The Cougars go up 1-0 on a short-side rip by Matt Kane, assisted by younger brother Tim, early in the second period. Despite outshooting MC by a 35-22 margin, the Cougars can't get another one past Carmel's goalie. GRCC goalie Adam Janecyk, who didn't see much action in the first period, comes up big in the second and third to thwart the comeback try and earn the shutout.
The Cougars play Milwaukee's Catholic Memorial in the championship game Saturday at 7:30 p.m. (good seats still available). Memorial won its opening round game 4-1 over Black River Falls, getting two goals from Jeff Costello and outshooting Black River 51-24. For the boxscore, click here.
