Trenton Showcase Update

Talked to some fans and coaches down in Trenton and here are results with some summaries, based on conversations I was able to have with coaches or hockey dads. A pretty good showing by the 7 West Michigan teams, who post a collective 2-4-1 record for the day, though most were 1 goal games (FHNE lost by 2 but one was an EN with about 15 seconds left.)

Farmington 5 Traverse City West 1 -- The Titans lose to the #6 ranked team in D-2. Farmington loses the battle of the shots 22-21, but wins the battle of goals by a 5-1 score.

Traverse City Central 3 Grosse Pointe North 2 (OT) -- Despite being outshot by a 2 to 1 ratio, TCC wins an OT thriller over the #5 ranked team in D-1. Shane Darrow gets the game-winner on a 2-on-1, and netminder Dan Spencer was a wall. Final shots were 38-19 in favor of Grosse Pointe North. The Record-Eagle has a story here.

Portage Central 2 Birmingham 2 - The Mustangs got goals from Jay Rehm and Marc Lassiter, and sophomore goaltender Brogan Vandevelde had 21 saves in a well-played contest against Birmingham.

OLSM 3 Mona Shores 2 - The Sailors kept it close, despite being without their three senior captains. Kyle Hicks got a deflection of a shot from Ryan Ellis for the first one (Ryan Burmeister also assisted). Tyler McCarl scored the Sailors other goal in the third to cut the margin to 3-2. Burmeister assisted on the second goal, too. Scottie Tiefenthal had 20 saves for Mona.

Davison 5 Kentwood 4 (OT) - The Falcons "played awesome," according to Coach Todd Bell. "We were down a couple of times and we came back. We played great." Tyler Copeland, Jeff Sanders, Kyle Harrison and Travis Miller scored for Kentwood. Zach Bresko had 23 saves. Game winner came on a kid stepping out of the penalty box in OT and scoring on a breakaway. "You hate to lose that way, especially since we run that play ourselves," Bell said. "I'm proud of how our kids responded today."

Stoney Creek 3 Forest Hills N/E 1 - The game was even at 1-1 until Stoney Creek scored on a fluky goal with about 2:30 left in the third. FHNE pulled the goalie and put tremendous pressure on for the last 1:24, but couldn't get the equalizer. Stoney Creek got an empty netter with 15 seconds left for the final margin. "We played well," Coach Kevin Zaschak told me. "They were one of those teams with no one who stood out, just a lot of fast kids who worked hard. They're probably the fastest team we've played against this season."
