Forest Hills Central and Rockford squared off in the championship game of the McMichigan Cup, having cruised to easy victories in their first 2 games of the tourney. After a scoreless 1st period, FHC jumped to a 1-0 lead on a goal by Nick Covert (assisted by Aaron Byers) at the 9:12 mark. FHC followed that ups with a goal just :35 later by Evan Hess (assisted by Drew Preston). Rockford was able to pull within 1 goal a minute later a goal by Mason McGillicudy from a nice feed by Adam Hoard. Jake Chaffee then redirected a shot from Tyler Hall to make it an even score at 2-2.
FHC took a 3-2 lead less than a minute into the 3rd on a goal by Morgan Feenie, assisted by Kevin Pechumer. Rockford tied it up again midway through the 3rd with a goal from Andrew Beeg (assisted by Hall and Chaffee).
Both teams played awesome hockey for the remainder of the 3rd and for two-and-a-half overtimes. Excellent goaltending on both sides was the theme. FHC got the game winner in the third OT on a slapshot from just inside the blue line by Charles Puff with a mad scramble in front of the Rockford net. The goal gave FHC the McMichigan Cup for 2008 in a championship game that was truly awesome. Congrats to the Rangers and Rams on a great final. There is coverage of game in the GR Press here.
Hats off to Grandville High School for putting on another great tournament. I've gotten lots of emails and texts about what a great three days of hockey it was. Also, thanks to photographer Randy Ellen for the updates throughout the tourney. Randy and his team shot more than 17,000 pictures during the tournament, and you can view them (and order them) on his website by clicking here.
