Nothing like some Wednesday night hockey to break up the week. Took in a few periods at a couple of games tonight. Saw the first two periods of Kenowa Hills vs. Jenison out at Walker. KH moves the puck well and plays hard in front of the net. Left late in the second period with Kenowa up 4-0 and the shots were 23-2 in their favor. The final ended up 6-3. Check out this story in the Advance.
Shot over to Griff's to check out Forest Hills Northern/Eastern against Grand Rapids West Catholic. Was a pretty good first period -- scoreless until the last minute when FHN/E put two late period goals on the board. By the end of the second, score was 7-0. FHN/E started soph goalie Ian Jester and played its whole bench. Another soph, Keenan Sullivan, had two early goals and the senior forwards -- McSween, Ullery, Johnston and Rennaker -- turned it up in the second period and looked pretty dominant. The one area where FHN/E looks a little thin is on defense.
Was not suprised to see East Kentwood's coach, Todd Bell, and four of his players at Griff's, scouting the Forest Hills team in advance of Friday's big OK-Tier 1 tilt between FHN/E and EK. Game time is 7 p.m. at East Kentwood.
Final scores to report from around West Michigan:
Portage Northern 7 Eagles 6 (OT)
Kenowa Hills 6 Jenison 3
Forest Hills N/E 9 West Catholic 1
Mattawan 2 GR Christian 0
Portage Central 10 Kalamazoo United 0
Cadillac 4 Muskegon Catholic Central 0
Traverse City Central 2 Gaylord 1
