Tough night in West Michigan

Three teams, three tough losses. GRCC nipped 1-0 by Flint Powers and Rockford nipped 2-1 by Marquette. East Kentwood loses 4-1 to Clarkston, despite outshooting them 31-17, on four PP goals. What a bummer for some great seniors from all three teams. Have to go meet the boy and the bus at Catholic. Will have some pictures of the GRCC game later and some more commentary on the games.

I'm not altogether suprised by West Michigan teams losing. There are definitely some amazing teams and athletes around here, but as someone who played in the UP and the detroit area, the competition is always tough. Congrats to MQT and (my hometown) Calumet who play fast, physical hockey. UP POWER! We'll do it all again next year and with any hope, West Michigan will bring home some championships.

Agreed. Penalties pretty much determined the EK game. Good officiating, btu EK could just not stay out of the sin bin and paid the price. The 1st period was the most dominant period of the year for EK. They only had to zamboni 1/2 the ice. Good season for all the teams and good luck FHN/E. Tough task, but everyone is beatable. Work hard and let the cards fall where they may.

agree with 1st comment. other than EM teams, anyone who has experienced the MQT system/ played against them in various levels, knows it is a true & proud hockey town. Many WM great hockey players are not playng HS - they play midget major in Detroit, with Canada teams, prep school hockey all over the country, etc.- if parents can afford it.Talented WMHS age kids leave home to pursue their dream. None can deny competiton is tougher in EM because of more youth talent for MI & other tates whpo come to play here..
Past the time for MI. to decide to do what MN. & many East coast States are doing: allow HS kids to play on other teams (ex: Midget Major).Only MHSHA can change system to benefit all young players. They need to step up to ensure MI. young players are given best oppotuniites so our kids are dominant single state force in USA. MHSHA can work together to ensure seasons & schedules don't conflict as other states do. detroit is Hockey town.. Redwings are great selecting players that "fit' what they need, regardless of where players come from. DRW has great opporuntity with the USA 18& under team in ann arbor. same is true with UM College hockey. Time for MHSA to stop the stall & act now to avoid wasted $'s spent - Time to be proactive & innovative.

Quite a leap from post 1 to post 3. The biggest difference between MN and MI is that the MN players elect to play for their HS teams for the 4-5 months it takes to play the season. It is a priority for them to represent their community. In MI it is a priority for many players to represent themselves. How is the State of MI or anybody else gonna legislate that.

MHSSA can quickly/easily change/rewrite & vote in new policy. Thru this way they represent the state. Any good business person could make this happen effeciently.
We can agree to disagree about MN. players. They do play for HS teams to represent their communitities. They also have the advantage to play for other teams to impove themselves. Remember they are not the only state doing this.

Sorry to say I lack some respect for MHSHA. They delayed the change in some sports season change , spending a ton of money thru a very long process. It does not matter our personal preference. it does matter than almost every other state qucikly go9t tis done. As the state losing the higesat % of population in the country, one just can't ignore this waste of time & money.

how can you say players in michigan play for themselves and players in minnesota play for their community. i play high school hockey in west michigan and i play for my town and my school and my teammates, just like almost everyother hs hockey player in the country. it is and inaccuarte assumption to say minnesota does not have players who play for themselves, there are those types of players everywhere.

also to the people complaining about the mhsaa problems and not "fixing" them fast enough, if you have a problem with something then do it yourself n try to do a better job.

From someone that's been around hockey awhile, including a lot of years in both MI and MN (neither now). I'll summarize by two bullets:
- age old arguments - HS vs travel, and MI vs MN. All sides have good points and bad points imo. Be happy, and proud, MI has some of the very best hockey in the country.
- and be happy this blog is as professional, timely, and comprehensive as it is. It differentiates west michigan hockey from almost any other place. Kudos.
