Wayland 3 South Christian 2

Wayland had not won a game since January 18th. After a severe beating by Lowell/Caledonia friday night 10-0 (mercy rule after 2), it looked like the Wildcats were ready to pack up their hockey bags and trade them for golf bags. South Christian had just played a great game with Lowell/Caledonia on Thursday losing 3-1 with Lowell/Caledonia scoring an empty netter. The stage was set for the final meeting of the season between the two bottom teams in OK Tier III.

Wayland came out hungry and gained the momentum early. Although the score was 0-0 after the first period, Wayland controlled the play for most of the period.

The second period was just as hard fought. Wayland's efforts finally paid off as Tyler Scheider netted two goals in a span of 16 seconds to end the second. Both goals were assisted by Brian VanFleet and Kyle Sheerin. Both goals were scored on rebounds that were not cleared by South's scrambling defense. Wayland carried a 2-0 lead into the second period.

Whatever coach VanVliet said between the second and third periods got the Sailors fired up for what would be an exciting third period. South Christian got on the board about half way through the period on a goal scored in a similar fashion as Wayland's two goals. David Devries found a loose puck in front of the Wayland net making it a 2-1 game. Assists went to Danny Rabourn and Mitch Doornbos. After South gained some momentum, Wayland went on a power play with 6 minutes left in the game. Billy Johnson was able to get a clear shot from the slot and beat South Christian goaltender Greg Kortman on the blocker side making it a 3-1 game. Brian VanFleet recorded his 3rd assist of the game on the goal.

South was not ready to give up however. With 1:51 left in the period Eric Veeneman found another loose puck deep in the Wayland zone and scored a power play goal to pull back within 1. Assists went to David Devries and Jake DeBoer. South Christian could not get the tying goal in the final minutes and Wayland ended up winning a close one 3-2. Wyland's goaltender Brandon Sopjes recorded the win and stopped 19 of 21 shots, while Greg Kortman for South Christian took the loss stopping 19 of 22 shots.

Both teams have 1 league game left with Northview next weekend.

Wayland finally put a whole game together. South was flat and Wayland outplayed them almost the whole game. Kortman deserves all conference. He's kept them in and one many games for South this year.
