GRCC, EGR to face off in pre-regional final

Grand Rapids Catholic Central and East Grand Rapids earned the right to play in the final of pre-regional #35 by virtue of wins over Kenowa Hills and West Catholic, respectively.

The GRCC Cougars, ranked #1 in D-3, got hat tricks from Paul Ziemke and John Dery, plus individual goals from Kevin Boman and Tyler Godfrey in an 8-1 victory over the Knights of Kenowa Hills. The Cougars had 45 shots on the night and racked up 12 assists, including 2 each for Ziemke and Mark Koenigsknecht, in the win. Adam Janecyk earns the win in goal for GRCC.

The Pioneers of East Grand Rapids won a hard-fought 2-1 victory over the West Catholic Falcons on a third-period goal by Greg Afendoulis. The junior forward threw the puck toward the WC net and had it bounce off a Falcon player's stick for the game-winner. Corey Domin had the other goal for EGR. Eric Judy had the Falcons goal, on an assist from Michael Davey. Spencer Boorsma was awesome in net for the Falcons, with 33 saves. Ian McDonald was solid in the net for EGR with 15 saves.

There's a nice story about the games in today's Grand Rapids Press. GRCC and EGR will face off on Thursday at 8 p.m. at Griff's in the pre-regional final.
