Not sure what the situation is about hockey tonight. From what I can tell from media websites, all public and private schools are closed from Portage up to Petoskey. Even if there is no school, games could be played if the ADs of both schools agree -- those decisions typically must happen by about 12:30 or 1 p.m. The conventional wisdom is that since the rinks are primarily private facilities (rather than school owned) and since they will likely be open, that games will be played unless one team has to travel some distance. Looking at tonight's schedule, that's really only the case in one game (MCC vs. WC). Will be contacting the ADs, coaches and/or rinks later to check status of games.
If games are being played, there are two big ones tonight that could factor heavily in divisional crowns in the Big North Conference and the Southwest Michigan High School Hockey League.
TC West vs. TC Central (7:30 p.m. @ Howe) -- Both teams lead the BNC conference with 5-1 records, and the four other league teams have at least three losses apiece. Both TCC and TCW have this game and three other league games left. So the team that wins tonight gets 2 points and the right to use a famous coaching sound byte: "We control our own destiny." Should be an awesome game. Here's a preview in the TC Record-Eagle. (UPDATE: I've confirmed with one of the coaches that the game is "on" and will be played tonight.)
Portage Central vs. Portage Northern (8 p.m. Wings Annex) --Portage Central is undefeated in league play, while Northern's only blemish came at the hands of the Mustangs in a 4-1 loss in the Portage Classic. The Huskies, though, have been playing great hockey since, going 10-1 with its only loss to highly ranked SMCC. They are, to use another famous coaching cliche, "getting better every week." Should be closer than the first meeting of the teams this season. CANCELED
