Momentum is a funny thing. East Kentwood had just scored its second PP goal of the night to go up 4-1 with less than five minutes left in the second period. Then, just 20 seconds later, Mona Shores senior JC Boyd took a boarding penalty out of what looked to be frustration. EK had all the momentum and it looked like this one was done like dinner.
As ESPN football guy Lee Corso would say: "Not so fast, my friend."
For the next two minutes, Mona buzzed around the East Kentwood zone and got several scoring chances, despite being a man down. With 8 seconds left in the Boyd penalty, Adam Meloche scored an unassisted shorthanded goal. Momentum shifted. Then, with just 50 ticks left on the clock in period two, East Kentwood's Jeff Sanders was sent off for roughing. Mona wasted no time. Sixteen seconds later, Meloche scored again (assist to Boyd) and suddenly we had ourselves a game at 4-3.
In the third, Mona looked like it wanted to give the momentum back to East Kentwood. Just 24 seconds in, Boyd took another penalty, this time for slashing, to put Kentwood on the PP. The Sailors once again rose to the challenge, killing off the penalty with an aggressive forecheck. At the nine minute mark, Mona went down a man once more on another slash, this time by Andrew Ulfsax, but the PK once again held EK off the board. For the next few minutes, momentum shifted back and forth until Tyler McCarl lit the lamp with 5:40 left to tie the game at 4-4.
In the overtime, it was more of the same, as both teams pressured and East Kentwood had several strong scoring chances, but the Falcons couldn't slip one past Sailors goalie Scott Tiefenthal. With 2:47 left in the extra session, Mona sophomore Austin Zaloga broke into the Falcons zone and, surrounded by four black jerseys, threw one at the net, where Boyd stuffed it past EK goalie Ben Belton for the winner.
In all, a great game, and the WMHSH Blog once again was lucky enough to see an OT thriller between two teams that left it all on the ice. The Sailors' JC Boyd made up for his two untimely trips to the sin bin with two very timely goals -- including the game-winner -- and two assists. Adam Meloche had two goals and assisted on the Boyd's first goal, a breakaway early in the second that cut the EK lead to 2-1. East Kentwood got goals from Jeff Sanders, Travis Miller, Brennan McBride and Joey Shirely. Kyle Harrison had two assists for EK; Miguel Rodriguez, Anthony Pino, and TravisFritsma all had assists, too. Pix are below, including scoresheet. Check out the bonus coverage on Fox 17's website.
