Coaches' Notes: Impact Players

I got this rather thoughtful response from a West Michigan high school coach about who he'd want on his team if he could pluck a player from another local high school hockey squad. He picked three players, noting, "I have a young team, so I get three because my team needs experience." His comments follow:

"A successful team needs a leader. Not a coach who wants to lead, but a player who understands the game of hockey and the game of life. A true leader is defined not by stats, but by his actions and the impact of those actions on those around him. Matt Kane (Center, Grand Rapids Catholic Central) is the true leader of GRCC. He allows the other players to shine, but Matt stays focused on the big picture. Jeff Johnston (Forward, Forest Hills Northern/Eastern) does the same for FHN/E, but he speaks louder with his play than Matt. Both Jeff and Matt are talented in separate ways, but they are always the 'impact player' on their teams due to their ability to see the complete picture and be a true leader. I'd also consider Ben Grover (Defense, East Kentwood) an impact player, especially this season. As Kentwood stuggles with youth and inexperience, Ben has stepped it up and reminded his teammates that win or lose, they will compete in every game and on every shift. When his Co-Captain went down with broken leg, Ben put the team on his watch.

All 3 of these players are 'impact players.' Would I put them on the ice when I needed a goal or to prevent a goal? Yes. Would I put them on TV or in front of the media to represent the team. Yes, I would. That is the true meaning of an impact player."

WHO CARES THE POINT IS THAT HE IS A IMPACT PLAYER AND SHOWS LEADERSHIP AND HE ALSO SCORES BIG GOALS FOR HIS TEAM....THE KID HAS ALOTTA HEART AND DOES BEST FOR THE TEAM ON A GRCC TEAM THAT HAS A ALOT OF TALENT BUT NEEDS KIDS LIKE KANE TO STEP UP AS A LEADER

I agree with all 3 picks. Is it a coincidence that all 3 played on the West Michigan Stars team this fall?A credit that the correct kids were picked...
