Big Rapids and Ferris State University welcome back coach Vincent Owen (Jension coach and ex-Ferris State Bulldog goalie) to town, but it's Cardinal goalie Curtis Hanba who gets the 3 - 0 shut-out win for Big Rapids. Scoring opened in the first period at the 10:00 minute mark with Matt Sigmund getting the first goal of his high school career with assists going to freshman Justin Reams and Jon Robison. Big Rapids fired upwards of 14 shots on Jension goaltender Kyle Valkema in the first period, though he stood firm and rejected all but one, and after one period it was Big Rapids 1 - Jenison 0.
The 2nd period presented both teams with a couple of nice scoring opportunities, as Jenison's Lorne Brooks had all but a "gimme goal" until Cardinal goalie Hanba made possibly the best save of his career by sliding over to deny the Wildcat forward his spoils. Big Rapids also had chances with both Michael Hickson and Bill Clark being denied at point blank range by Valkema and after 2 periods the scored remained the same BR 1 - Jenison 0. At the start of the third, the Jenison faithful anticipated that their team would get back into the game, but it was Big Rapid's Michael Hickson whom dashed those hopes with a goal at the 11:50 mark, assists going to Bill Clark and Tom Hancock. Several minutes later it was again Hickson , this time an unassisted short handed goal that set the final score of 3 to 0. Hanba gets the shut-out win for Big Rapids, stopping upwards of 20 shots on the night. The Cardinals head to Monroe St. Mary's Catholic Central next weekend for tournament play along with Pontiac Notre Dame and Riverview as Jenison faces Grand Rapids West Catholic in a Thursday night contest.
